The first question to ask: What makes a plant, a plant?
We are plants
We are plants, conquerors of land
before fish learned to stand.
In fact, our presence assisted
in the animal’s terrestrialization,
through the atmosphere’s oxygenation.
Don’t confuse us with fungi,
though we’re both multicellular, sessile
creatures that seldom switch locations,
yet sometimes change from sexual to
asexual and back again in a cycle.
Don’t confuse us with algae,
though we’re both primary producers,
paramount players in sunlight collection
and energy transformation,
essential to keep life in motion.
Carbon dioxide and water we procure:
generating glucose to you we offer,
or distribute to leaves through transfer;
though it’s the moisture we treasure,
while building pressure in our cells for turgor.
From moss carpets to tree towers,
rooted flowers to canopy dwellers.
Fleshy stems or spiny vines,
garden beauties or salad greens?
Our presence knows no boundaries, for
we are plants.

Writing a poem was the first thing I decided to do when starting Plant Pals — there’s no better way to introduce the subject of this blog without being too dull and informative. At least, that’s what I think. I hope you enjoyed the short read as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Whoever, whenever or wherever you are reading this, please take care, and I’ll see you again in the next post. 🍃 ~⊰
